Practice Questions Question: 18 Page: 362 Difficulty: medium
Since the circle graph is based on percents, let's just say there the graph represents 100 people.
To find the MEDIAN length of unemployment, we'll list the lengths in ASCENDING order, beginning with those who worked 1 to 4 weeks. These people represent 40% of the 100 people, so here are 40 entries between 1 and 4 weeks.
The next group of people to list are those who worked 5 to 10 weeks These people represent 20% of the 100 people, so here are 20 entries between 5 and 10 weeks. So, our list now looks like this: (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (1-4 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), (5-10 wks), . . ..
Since we have 100 data points in total, the median will be the average of the 50th and 51st values listed. This means the median will be anything from 5 to 10 weeks
Check the answer choices....only answer choice B falls within this range.

Solution
The median length of unemployment is the average of the two middle lengths when the lengths are listed in order from least to greatest; that is, the median is the number at which 50% of the lengths have been listed. To find the median length, first note that the group with the shortest unemployment lengths, 1 to 4 weeks, accounts for the first 40% of the lengths in the ordered list. Then, because the group with the next longer lengths, 5 to 10 weeks, accounts for the next 20% of the lengths in the list, the number at which 50% of the lengths have been listed is in this group. So the median length is in the 5-to-10 week interval. Among the answer choices, the only choice that is in the 5-to-10 week interval is Choice B, 8.

I did not understand why the task write about median for the 1-4 week unemployed people? Does it seem that we founded the median for all categories not for 1-4-week unemployed?

Hi i cannot find any DI specific topic on the math book
Sir
it is the fifth chapter "Data Analysis"
Also the data analysis or the evaluation of a graph is just an application of concepts such as average, percentage change , median, and so forth to a table or pie chart
I hope now is more clear for your preparation for the GRE exam
I suggest you to know in its intimacy what is about this test and the concept tested, otherwise you will go in the wrong direction

I'm struggling to understand why we are including those who are also employed in the categories OTHER than the 1-4 weeks category. How does median for those working at least week also include those working 5-10 , 11-14 weeks etc.,?? shouldn't we only be looking at the 1-4 week slice?

I believe you're confusing the 1-4 weeks category with the diagram note that says all of the workers in the graph were employed for at least 1 week. So, for example, the pie chart on the left provides information about the 10 million workers who were employed for at least 1 week. Each of those 10 million workers falls into one of five categories - worked 1 to 4 weeks - worked 5 to 10 weeks - worked 11 to 14 weeks - worked 15 to 25 weeks - worked 26 weeks or more
Our goal is to determine the possible median employment duration of the 10 million workers.
